Brief:
Explore and articulate issues and design considerations particular to the development of products for manufacture. Through a design and build project, explore and apply individual and collaborative practices required to develop a product from concept to manufacture. The chosen object is a task lamp; produce one for every class member (26)
Lune
Lune is a task lamp that integrates functionality and elegance, inviting a tactile exploration of light and transforming spaces with ambient and versatile illumination. The design plays upon the forms and movements reminiscent of the moon.
Composed of bold geometric shapes and delicate detailing, Lune presents a graphic and sculptural silhouette. Its singular colour unifies the form, drawing focus to these defining elements.
A light source housed between two discs casts a band of light throughout the room. The subtitle tension between the discs captivates the user, evoking a desire to touch;
The aluminum spun discs taper to a soft edge; a gentle pinch draws them together, manipulating the light’s path. Atop the stem sits a dimmer, enabling control of the light intensity with a simple twist, while a hinge allows the discs to tilt gracefully backward to accommodate a range of lighting needs.
To ensure a streamlined production process for batch manufacture, and a high-quality finish, we conducted rigorous iterations through product sketches, model making, and material exploration. The final design employs several manufacturing processes including aluminium casting, metal spinning, FDM and SLA 3D printing, CNC metal lathes, CNC milling machines, laser cutting, and water-jet cutting.
